Natural History Exhibits
Connecting visitors to nature to develop empathy and awareness of the natural world.

Doral Glades Nature Center is the City of Doral’s newest city park and first nature center.  Parks department staff wanted the focus of the 2,000 square foot exhibit space to be on their neighbor, the Everglades.  To respond to the soaring ceiling and wall of windows looking out on the restored lake, we designed a series of cabinets with uprights that holds graphics and electronics.  The exhibits include electronic interactives, video, audio recordings, and manual interactives.  MAM Exhibit Design worked with Leslie Tharp Designs to create a multi layered steel wall with silhouettes of Everglades plants and animals.  The silhouettes were repeated on the walls and in the air above the exhibits.

Doral Glades

Everglades plants and animals can be discovered in this four layer steel wall. Leaves made by citizens of Doral in a leaf-making workshop were added to the canopy.

The lake can be seen through a lineup of fishing poles. Freshwater fish on a ‘stringer’ are identified, along with their favorite bait and habitats.

Doral Glades

A diorama shows the geology beneath Doral; the surface shows both present day Doral and topography as it would have been when a part of the Everglades.

Doral Glades

Animal camouflage is shown through question and answer sliders.

Doral Glades

A video microscope allows visitors to examine natural materials up close; center staff change out the specimens weekly.

Doral Glades

Everglades water flow has been disrupted for the past 100 years by manmade causes; the interactive shows how a pond experiences wet and dry seasons.

Doral Glades

Silhouettes painted on the wall and in 3D add a layer of visual interest.

Doral Glades

Visitors use an interactive time-phased map to learn how Doral’s commercial and residential communities grew from Everglades landscapes to today’s urban landscape.

The exhibit is enlivened by numerous beautiful Everglades photographs made by Mac Stone.
